Then a naga is pretty much screwed since their speed is so low. Now, all that is moot if you turned the corner and walked into him. It's far better to have a small amount of XP go to something you won't use in order to soften up tougher monsters like Js and Os since they can really wreck you at low levels. Secondly, any low level character should be carrying around stones or darts or whatever to throw. I don't disagree 100%, it can definitely be tough to get a toon off the ground, but in the case you quoted, "you're doing it wrong." First off, as a stalker - and a slow one at that - you needed to cast mephitic cloud as soon as you saw that ogre. It's another thing to have the random dice rolls create a situation where there's no move you can take to survive.

It's one thing to have the random dice rolls make it easier or harder. I know roguelikes are always strongly luck-based, but I feel that Crawl takes it too far. So by the time you've exhausted your initial supply, you should have accumulated plenty of other options at your disposal. The roguelike Incursion is really great because you start the game with four heal spells and four teleports. But of course Crawl is the only game in the world where a teleport spell doesn't just teleport you. I was actually precautious enough to cast my teleport spell after the first hit, because I had had this happen with Ogres before. Just now my 40 hp stalker naga got killed by an Ogre in two hits.

In Nethack the answer was always to pray, but in this game I don't even get a god until later. I don't know of any recourse available to me.

Time and time again, I find myself standing next to some random orc in full health, hacking away, and then after a series of bad rolls I get a low hitpoints warning while the orc is fine, and at this point I either have a heal potion/ teleport scroll or I'm dead. I think my chief problem is that there's so few options available for survival in the early game. I've personally have never gotten a rune with a stabber character (but I'm not that good a player). Based on my experience though, once you get to late-mid game though your lack of options really starts to wear on you. This isn't a problem in the early game and mid-game because that kobold probably can't one-shot you and a lot of mid-game guys are vulnerable to sleep / paralysis and the like and even with a dagger will go down in a couple of hits. I don't think stabbing got weakened, what I was trying to say and maybe didn't say well is that stabbing is hard to run end game because you are a "one-shot wonder." The stabby-stabby will drop things all over the place the problem is that if you miss / fail to proc a stab, you're done for. It was hard to start up, but once he got going he's going great thus far. Just go around either sleeping->stabbing or invis->stabbing.

Must say he's my most successful character yet. I just started following the spriggan enchanter guide on the dungeon crawl wiki.
